Review: Doon by Carey Corp, Lorie Langdon

Summary-
DOON…
Veronica doesn't think she's going crazy. But why can't anyone else see the mysterious blond boy who keeps popping up wherever she goes? When her best friend, Mackenna, invites her to spend the summer in Scotland, Veronica jumps at the opportunity to leave her complicated life behind for a few months.
But the Scottish countryside holds other plans.
Not only has the imaginary kilted boy followed her to Alloway, she and Mackenna uncover a strange set of rings and a very unnerving letter from Mackenna's great aunt—and when the girls test the instructions Aunt Gracie left behind, they find themselves transported to a land that defies explanation. Doon seems like a real-life fairy tale, complete with one prince who has eyes for Mackenna and another who looks suspiciously like the boy from Veronica's daydreams. But Doon has a dark underbelly as well. The two girls could have everything they've longed for...or they could end up breaking an enchantment and find themselves trapped in a world that has become a nightmare.
DOON is loosely based on the premise of the musical Brigadoon, with permission from the ALan Jay Lerner Estate and the Frederick Loewe Foundation. Follow the journey at http://www.DoonSeries.com

Review-
Doon is a YA fairy tale-type book that is based on the musical Brigadoon. I'd actually never heard of Brigadoon, which was first performed in 1947, but if it's anything like the book, I might have to watch it. I would have to give this book four and a half stars for the many different, entertaining elements that authors Corp and Langdon incorporated into the book. Both young protagonists, Vee and Kenna, have had very difficult lives so there is an aspect of reality and teen drama. Then, there is a thread of romance running through the book as the young women meet the men who will ultimately shape their lives and their futures. The nod to Brigadoon, the musical, is the fantasy world of Doon, a Scottish land that appears once every hundred years to a select few people--Vee and Kenna included. And finally, there is a very real mystery in Doon. Who is the witch? Can the girls find her before the residents of Doon have the girls blamed for the witch's mischief?
From the first page to the last, I was entranced and engrossed. I bit my nails hoping that the witch of Doon would be caught before more townsfolk were kidnapped. Of course all of my guesses as to who she could be were SO wrong! Also, Vee and Kenna have to make a choice whether to stay in Doon or not so I was hoping throughout the book that they would make the decision that would make me, the reader, satisfied. Needless to say, the ending was an absolute surprise and left me flabbergasted! As soon as I can get my hands on the second of this four book series, I will probably stay up all night reading to see how things progress. Very fun read!
